Mexican communications costs down 13% – IFT

The cost of communications in Mexico fell 13.03 percent in the year to July, bucking the inflationary trend observed in other consumer markets, telecoms regulator IFT said.
Over the month of July alone, the cost of mobile phone services fell 3.9 percent, IFT said.

In the year to July, the cost of telecommunications services was down 14.5 percent, led by declining prices in long-distance international calls and mobile telephony.

IFT said prices are set to fall further thanks to operator Telmex’s plan to cut the price of landline to mobile calls by 30 percent on 1 August, followed by an additional 15 percent reduction on 1 January 2017 and a further 15 percent on 1 January 2018.

IFT approved the change and said it would benefit over 3 million fixed line customers who don’t subscribe to a convergent package.
