Telefónica wins wide-ranging deal with Meliá hotels

Telefónica has won a deal to provide a range of IT and communications services to Spanish hotel company Meliá.

The Spain-based operator will upgrade Meliá’s information systems, provide a suite of “plug & play” services via the cloud as well as more traditional communications services.

The hotel company’s 42,000-plus employees will also get 365 days a year, 24-hours a day, seven days a week incident coverage.

Telefónica said Meliá was going through its own digital transformation, and that it would help to standardise and simplify global level services to improve customer experience.

Meliá owns around 370 hotels in more than 40 countries.

Its CEO Gabriel Escarrer said: “In a highly competitive digital world like today’s, where innovation is continuous, technology has become a central part of our strategy.”

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

Telefónica President José María Álvarez-Pallete said: “The alliance of two leading Spanish companies is always great news, more so in the case of Meliá and Telefónica, two of the most international Groups in the country.

“Companies need to quickly transform and adapt to the new challenges and opportunities that the current digital environment presents.

“The agreement signed today will make us stronger and more competitive, will boost the competitiveness of both companies, and will also promote our international reputations in two key industries such as technology and tourism.”

Last week, the operator launched a new business unit that brings together a range of big data services it sells to the enterprise market.
