Unity, Xiaomi partner on apps

Platform provider Unity Technologies revealed details of its partnership with device maker Xiaomi, stating that “Unity developers will have unparalleled access and distribution support across a key market of players seeking high-quality original experiences”.

Apps developed using Unity can be published into Xiaomi’s MIUI app store, which has seen more than 50 billion downloads to date. Xiaomi will provide support and assistance negotiating local licensing terms.

Developers can also enable Unity Ads, which becomes the first third-party ad network in any Chinese Android app store.

Unity IAP, which enables in-app purchases across stores with a single unified application programming interface, will help developers port their in-app purchases directly to the Xiaomi app store.

Unity’s platform has been used to create apps including Pokemon Go. In July, it raised $181 million, and said it would use the funds to focus on augmented and virtual reality (VR).

The Unity platform saw nearly 5 billion mobile downloads in Q3 2016 and supports millions of developers worldwide for 2D and 3D development, including mobile games.

“A large part of ensuring developer success is providing access to the platforms that matter most,” said Andrew Tang, China country manager at Unity.

“By partnering with Xiaomi we can help Unity developers bring their creative vision to a massive audience and accelerate the progress of quality entertainment worldwide.”

China accounts for more than one-quarter of the new mobile devices activated on the Unity network every three months and Xiaomi devices have the most Android installs of games made on Unity.

“Unity shares our vision for rapid innovation, and we’re excited to partner to accelerate creation and continue bridging the gap between desire and distribution,” said Jingyan Liu, deputy GM at Xiaomi.

Xiaomi publishing and partnership benefits will be available to Unity developers next year.
