Italy’s Wind warned about SMS campaigns

Italy’s data protection authority, Garante Privacy, has warned Wind about mass SMS campaigns designed to persuade users to give their consent to receiving promotional messages, saying they breach rules on the use of personal data and amount to an invasion of privacy.

The regulator said Wind bombarded users with some 5 million SMS between August 2015 and 2016, but only persuaded around 85,000 to grant their consent. The operator has now been given 60 days to eradicate all databases that include numbers of users who haven’t consented to receiving messages for promotional purposes.
