Rijeka got the first smart bus stops in Croatia

Two smart bus stops are available from today to Rijeka’s citizens and numerous tourists that offer a range of functionalities for a more efficient and enjoyable experience of city transport. Stops represent the world’s technological breakthrough to the affiliated smart cities of the future, and in the background of the whole story is a six-month pilot project of the City of Rijeka in partnership with Ericsson Nikola Tesla, Hrvatski Telekom, Smart RI, Autotrolej and Rijeka promet.

Located on two very frequented locations in Rijeka’s city traffic, by Rijeka’s skyscraper in Trpimirova Street and Žabica, the stops offer a range of functionalities that citizens and the growing number of tourists need today in public transport. A combination of Ericsson’s Connected Traffic Cloud and HT’s smart bus stop concept make them unique, which complement each other and together make a completely new service for end users.

The stop provides passengers with an overview of the timetable and maps of the bus stations with the current bus positions. The solution is based on the Internet of Things technology, and collects Autotrolej’s data and displays a total of 12 Rijeka city traffic cameras on a mobile application. This application enables smart public transport, and for the first time is available on mobile phones in Rijeka, making this solution unique in the world.

“For many years, the City of Rijeka has been developing a concept of a smart city, which involves the design of different solutions in order to facilitate everyday life and improve the quality of life of citizens such as free internet, city card or smart traffic lights that regulate the flow of traffic in the city. The concept of Rijeka as a smart city is constantly evolving, so City of Rijeka has recently founded Smart RI as the leader of the Smart Cities Competence Center, which is made up of 20 partners, among others Ericsson Nikola Tesla d.d. and Hrvatski Telekom d.d., with the aim of developing new marketable products such as 4D Intelligent Infrastructure system, energy management and energy efficiency planning, public lighting management system and so on. This project also resulted in cooperation on setting up smart bus stops in Croatia and launching the mobile application presented today, projects that will surely make it easier for citizens of Rijeka to use public transport and managing their time,” said Rijeka’s Mayor Vojko Obersnel.
